Jerusalem (July-August)

The Lutheran Church of the Redeemer . . .

. . . right next door to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher (which you are seeing from the tower of the Lutheran church). 10 July 2013

Third time's the charm here- I finally got a picture of The Sepulcher, or rather the shrine that covers it.

This is my favorite artwork from the Church of the Holy Sepulcher.
This is St. Mark's Church, where the Last Supper was held. 10 July 2013

Bethlehem Field Trip- 8 July 2013

Christmas House: where you can get all the Christmas souvenirs you could ever want!
The Church of the Nativity
Nativity Mary- she smiles in Nativity pictures.
Star of Bethlehem: in the hole is the rock floor of the cave where Jesus was born.
This is the grotto of St Jerome, where he wrote the Vulgate. It's under the Church of St Katherina, which is attached to the Church of the Nativity.
The Annunciation scene depicted on the door to the Church of the Nativity.
This is the inside of the Greek Orthodox Shepherd's Field Church.
The Angel Gabriel, hanging outside of the Franciscan Catholic Shepherd's Field Church.
One of the beautiful paintings inside the Catholic Shepherd's Field Church.
This is "Mormon" Shepherd's Field. So called because we Mormons like to go to an open field instead of a cramped church.

Me next to the watchtower in the field.
Besides our trip to Bethlehem, we also went to Herodion, a mountain built by Herod the Great, one of his many building projects. It had a huge palace with a Roman bathhouse, extensive tunnels and Herod's Mausoleum.
That big hill is Herod's mountain. The rectangular hole is Herod's private swimming pool, complete with a pleasure island. When filled with water it was 12 feet deep.
